Life in the land hidden among the hills, forests and lakes was still unhurried, marked by the course of the seasons. People were happy and she ate, and especially the finest beer, which made the land famous on all continents, they never lacked.
Wealth and fame, as you know, attract newcomers of all kinds… One day, an envious, angry and cunning pupa with a reptilian appearance and bat wings came to the land. With a lightning flight she traversed the entire kingdom, ravaging crops with filthy venom, poisoning wells and souring aging beers. The reptilian was so fast that none of the brave knights could even draw a sword.
The wise ruler of the land knew that he could not do anything by force. So he asked the chrysalis, “What do you want?” The reptile just laughed and replied, “Your riches!” The ruler asked again, “WHAT DO YOU WANT?!” The reptile became serious, looked into the eyes of the wise King, and said: “The curse will be lifted when someone gives me wine to drink, which will not be wine, and the taste of this drink will be due to the fruit ripening in the cold. Having heard the mystery, you have 2 years to fulfill it, otherwise …” – he did not finish and flew away.
The ruler of the land of lakes and forests called on all the inhabitants of the land to look for a solution with him. A brewer arrived and said that he knew the solution to the first part of the riddle. Instead of grape wine, you can brew barley wine – a beer whose style is called barley wine. Suddenly, among the newcomers, a tall man, a settler from the far north, began to jostle among the crowd, who said that he knew the answer to the second part of the riddle. He whispered something in the brewer’s ear, and they disappeared into the brewery… They didn’t come back for long.
The two years appointed by the chrysalis were coming to an end. Bored, merciless and audacious reptile, he came to the ruler on a fixed day, spoiling more beers. To his surprise, he saw from a distance that the ruler had a full cup in his hand to greet him. Knowing that no poison could harm him, confident, greedily drank the contents. What happened next amazed everyone. The reptile became even bigger and scarier…. Then, in the blink of an eye, he turned into a waxwing, freeing himself from the curse. The solution to the second part of the puzzle was mountain ash, whose red fruits are suitable for eating only after the first frost and soften the powerful power of barley wine.
Joy returned to the kingdom, and the barley wine with mountain ash, a delicious elixir of freedom, made the land famous again on all continents. From the name of a tall settler from the north and a rowan fruit, it was named BARLOW SORBUS.
