This dubbel is the lightest sibling in the heavyweight trio Chimay and is the perfect introduction for those who want to get to know Trappist beers. In that sense, Rouge is the strange one. Most Trappist and abbey beers start with blonde and then go from dubbel to triple or quadruple. But Chimay did it differently.

“Red” has less body than its “blue” brother. But this copper-colored beer has a surprising fruitiness along with curaçao touches and coriander. The initial flavor is sweet, while the dark malt maintains the final touches of burnt chicory and toasted bread. So, as the introductions progress, Rouge does a great job of educating the palate to the wider wonders of the Trappist universe.

It’s a beer with a pedigree. Chimay Rouge was brewed for the first time in 1862, although it was a slightly different beer then. The biggest step forward came after World War II. Like many other breweries, Chimay suffered greatly during the wars of the twentieth century. When the brewery was rebuilt, after World War II, everything was thought out, thought out and redrawn, with tradition and future in mind.

One of the changes was the format. At first, Rouge was only available in 75 cl bottles. When the 1948 Easter bells inaugurated Chimay Rouge, they appeared in the new 33 cl format. One of the continuities was taste. While the taste undoubtedly evolved in post-war rethinking, this beer remained inspired by the first original recipes. It turns out that the old ways are dying hard – since 1978. Rouge is again available in 75 cl bottles, which are affectionately called Première.

PRODUCENT -  Chimay

In the summer of 1850, a small group of monks settled on the wild Scourmont Plateau near Chimay. A farm, a brewery and a cheese factory were established around the monastery. Scourmont Abbey has developed a variety of economic activities, enabling an increase in regional employment.
