In 1952, in order to give the modernization of the brewery the right commercial basis, much attention was paid to the launch of two new Rochefort beers. Beer from the refectory was the basis for the development of the “Middel” beer (also known as “Merveille”), which evolved into Rochefort 6. However, 10 needed something else to pick it up: candied sugar dipped in wort in metal baskets, quite an innovation in those days.

In addition, two malts were used in the brewing process: Pilski and caramel, as well as wheat starch, two hop varieties and Rochefort’s own yeast. The result is the powerful Rochefort 10, a beer that will warm your heart with a strong dose of alcohol.

Whisky lovers will appreciate its warming glow. This red-brown beer has aromas of roasted wheat, fruit (figs, cherries), nuts and dark chocolate. In the mouth you can feel the taste of caramel, chocolate, ripe fruit and herbal touches of hops. All this continues to the end. Connoisseurs compare this beer to wine, whiskey and port.

Gentle, rich, intense, a lot of body. It’s food and drink at the same time, as the late beer guru Michael Jackson wrote. This nutritional overload is no accident. The monks of Rochefort followed a strict diet, in which there was no fish, meat and cheese on the menu. It took a beer like Rochefort 10 to supplement their limited diet.

St-Remy Abbey, also known as Abbaye Notre-Dame de Saint-Remy, was founded in 1230 in the south of Belgium. The monks started brewing beer around 1595. Through several wars, including the French Revolution and World War II, brewing has been stopped and resumed several times over the centuries. Most recently, brewing started again after World War II with the help of the monks of Chimay, bringing Rochefort Trappist beer back to the world. The abbey's beautiful little brewery, Rochefort Trappist Brewery, produces full-bodied, deep-flavored ales because the water source, Tridaine Spring, is rich in calcium. They are conditioned in bottles and are among the best beers in the world.
