Calvados is a type of fruit distillate made from fermented apple or pear juice. It is a French alcohol that has a controlled geographical origin and is a specialty of the Normandy region.
The production process of calvados includes several stages. First, the fruits, mainly apples, are pressed to obtain juice. Then the juice is fermented and the resulting fruit wine is distilled. Distillation takes place in traditional copper stills, which gives calvados its characteristic aroma and taste.
After distillation, calvados is aged in oak barrels for a certain period of time. It is the aging process that gives it depth of taste and ensures the development of a rich aromatic bouquet. The longer calvados matures, the more complex and subtle it becomes.
Calvados is known for its unique character and rich spectrum of flavors. It can have notes of apples, pears, vanilla, nuts, cinnamon and spices. It is an alcohol with a moderate alcohol content, usually oscillating between 40% and 45%.
